Make Your Own Favicon

A Favicon (short for Favorites Icon) is a small image associated with a website which is displayed in the browser's URL address bar; next to the sites name when the page is bookmarked; and in the tabbed document interface (for an example add this page to your favourites!). This allows a webdeveloper to create an eye catching marketing tool and further brand their sites.

Originally the process of creating a Favicon involved the placing of a special .ico file in the root of your directory, this process can now be simplified by placing a link to an image in any browser supported format in any site location (or even an external site). This increases the webdevelopers flexibility and opens the doors to even more eye-catching icon designs such as animated gifs.

#1 The Image: Create a 16 pixel by 16 pixel image in you favourite graphics editor. Once you are happy with how your icon looks save it as a .gif (although most other image extensions are normally recognized I recommend .gif for maximum compatibility).

#2 Upload Your Favicon: Upload your favicon.gif file to your website, for ease of explanation I will assume you will place this in the root directory (where the main index.html page is saved).

#3 Link To Your Favicon: Place the following code somewhere between the <head><⁄head> tags on all your pages:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http:⁄⁄www.yourdomain.com⁄favicon.gif">

If your Favicon is not saved in your Root Directory please edit the code accordingly

And that's it – you are now the proud owner of a Favicon! Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions at the following email info@better-hosting.com
